Description:
The detectives of 'E' division return in another psychological Peak District thriller from the acclaimed author of Black Dog and Dancing with the Virgins It's almost May Day, and on the desolate moors of Dark Peak the villagers of Withens are dying. One has been battered to death and left for the crows to find; another chose the wrong time to call on a neighbour. And one has been dead for two years - though not everyone will believe it. As far as the parents of missing student Emma Renshaw are concerned, their daughter is alive -- which doesn't help DS Diane Fry in her efforts to re-open the case. Will a grim discovery finally allow the Renshaws to return to their normal lives or break their grip on reality? DC Ben Cooper's attempts to solve the killings come up against an equally impenetrable barrier in the shape of the Oxley family. Descendants of tunnel-builders, they stick to their own area like the hefted sheep on the hillsides, passing on secret knowledge through generations and guarding their traditions from the likes of Cooper.

Description:
Component technologies like Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), COM+ and CORBA Components (CCM) have become mainstream in many application domains. Developers and architects who use this technology in their everyday work need to know more about component infrastructures than the API's of the respective technology. And this is the book they need. The first part of the book introduces a pattern language that describes how server-side component infrastructures work internally. It does not only adress the basic building blocks and their interactions. It also provides details about the reasons and rationales for this kind of system architecture. For each pattern, the book provides short examples of how it is implemented in EJB, CCM and COM+. These examples thus also serve as a good comparison of those three mainstream component infrastructures. The second part of the book uses EJB technology to provide even more detailed examples for the patterns, including UML diagrams and extensive source code. Also serving as a comprehensive overview of EJB, it introduces it from the architectural viewpoint and for the developer highlights the consequences of working with that architecture. Part three offers another approach to the material: a conversation between two people that describes how a concrete application has been built using component technology, focusing on the benefits of this approach. After reading this book you will: understand the principles and patterns of server-side component infrastructures be able to design your own proprietary component infrastructures for specific projects have learnt about the commonalities and differences between EJB, CCM and COM+ gain a comprehensive overview of EJB technology see how server-side component infrastructures can be used to great benefit in a real applicationThe "comic" illustrations accompanying the patterns have been created by Stefan Schulz who, when not drawing, works as an independent technology consultant. Description:
There are many ways to measure the complexity of a given object, but there are two measures of particular importance in the theory of computing: One is Kolmogorov complexity, which measures the amount of information necessary to describe an object. Another is computational complexity, which measures the computational resources necessary to recognize (or produce) an object. The relation between these two complexity measures has been studied since the 1960s. More recently, the more generalized notion of resource bounded Kolmogorov complexity and its relation to computational complexity have received much attention. Now many interesting and deep observations on this topic have been established. This book consists of four survey papers concerning these recent studies on resource bounded Kolmogorov complexity and computational complexity. It also contains one paper surveying several types of Kolmogorov complexity measures. The papers are based on invited talks given at the AAAI Spring Symposium on Minimal-Length Encoding in 1990. The book is the only collection of survey papers on this subject and provides fundamental information for researchers in the field. --This text refers to an alternate edition.

Description:
Here's a comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide to the underlying technologies, key selection criteria, and design and deployment processes behind wireless local loop (WLL) systems. This one-source reference helps technical professionals develop a sound understanding of WLL system design procedures, and provides practical guidance on choosing the best WLL and access technologies. It's unique in its clear presentation of both the technical and business issues associated with wireless in the local loop. If you're a WLL engineer, or a non-technical manager, marketer, or regulator involved in WLL system development, you'll find the information in this book invaluable. Well written introductory chapters discuss the main areas of the telecommunications environment, and the concepts of convergence and access technologies. You learn why wireless in the local loop is seriously challenging the use of traditional copper cable, the economic issues behind wired and wireless interconnection, and even some expert WLL market forecasts. From the Author Wireless local loop - the use of radio to provide a communications link to homes and businesses - has been a topic of much interest in the wireless community since around 1995. However, much has changed over the last five years. In the first edition of this book, I looked in detail at the use of wireless local loop as a means to provide connections to homes at low and medium data rates. Since then the emphasis has changed towards higher bandwidth systems able to provide 1 - 10Mbits/s to homes and up to 1Gbits/s to businesses. In this second edition, I have taken the opportunity to look in detail at this new class of wireless system, with extended chapters covering broadband technology and operation. I have also looked back over the last five years to ask why the original vision for fixed wireless changed and what the implications are for the future. The aim of this book is to be the single point of reference for engineers, managers, marketers, sales teams and others working in the area of fixed wireless, within manufacturers, operators, regulators, consultants and others involved in the industry. I have been highly active in the fixed wireless arena since 1997, working as Motorola's head of strategy for fixed wireless and chairing and presenting at many industry conferences. This book is a synthesis of all I have heard and learnt and has become widely used within the industry. --This text refers to an alternate edition.

Description:
Michael Corleone is returning to the U.S. after the two-year exile to Sicily in which reader left him in 'The Godfather.' But he is ordered to bring with him the young Sicilian bandit, Salvatore Guiliano, who is the unofficial ruler of northwestern Sicily. In his fight 'to make Sicilians free people,' the young folk hero, based on the real-life Giuliano of the 1940's, has made both the police and the Mafia his enemies. So when Don Croce Malo, chief of the Sicilian Mafia, and the policemen who has been tracking Guiliano each offer to help Corleone find the elusive Robin Hood, betrayal seems inevitable. Mario Puzo has created a sequel to 'The Godfather' that is every bit as compelling and dramatic. But 'The Sicilian' is a distinct literary achievement in its historical inspiration and its vivid portrait of Sicilian peasant life.

Description:
C Primer Plus is a conversational-style book aimed at those new to C programming. A friendly and easy-to-use self-study guide, this book will be appropriate for serious students of programming, as well as developers proficient in other languages with a desire to better understand the fundamentals of this core language. As with all the editions, author Stephen Prata's aim has been to create an introduction to C that is instructive, clear, and helpful. Programming concepts are explained along with details of the C language; the book does not assume that you are a professional programmer. Many short, easily typed examples illustrate just one or two concepts at a time, since learning by doing is one of the most effective ways to master new information. Finally, review questions and programming exercises at the end of each chapter punctuate the most critical information and help readers digest the most difficult concepts. The text has been updated to accommodate the emergence of a new standard for C-C99. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Description:
The great biologist Louis Pasteur suppressed 'awkward' data because it didn't support the case he was making. John Snow, the 'first epidemiologist' was doing nothing others had not done before. Gregor Mendel, the supposed 'founder of genetics' never grasped the fundamental principles of 'Mendelian' genetics. Joseph Lister's famously clean hospital wards were actually notorious dirty. And Einstein's general relativity was only 'confirmed' in 1919 because an eminent British scientist cooked his figures. These are just some of the revelations explored in this book. Drawing on current history of science scholarship, "Fabulous Science" shows that many of our greatest heroes of science were less than honest about their experimental data and not above using friends in high places to help get their ideas accepted. It also reveals that the alleged revolutionaries of the history of science were often nothing of the sort. Prodigiously able they may have been, but the epithet of the 'man before his time' usually obscures vital contributions made their unsung contemporaries and the intrinsic merits of ideas they overturned. These distortions of the historical record mostly arise from our tendency to read the present back into the past. But in many cases, scientists owe their immortality to a combination of astonishing effrontery and their skills as self-promoters.

For as long as they have existed, cities have been destroyed--sacked, shaken, burnt, bombed, flooded, starved, irradiated, and pillaged--in almost every case they have risen again. Rarely in modern times has a city not been rebuilt following destruction, be it natural or man-made. The Resilient City explores urban disasters from around the globe and the ongoing restoration of urban life. It examines why cities are rebuilt, how a vision for the future gets incorporated into a new urban landscape, and how disasters have been interpreted and commemorated in built form. An international cast of historians, architects, and urban studies experts looks at a diverse group of cities that have suffered traumas, including: * the Oklahoma City bombing * Chicago's great fire of 1871 * San Francisco's earthquake and fires of 1906 * Washington's invasion by the British during the War of 1812 * Berlin and Warsaw in World War II * Gernika's bombardment during the Spanish Civil War * Jerusalems rebuilding following centuries of destruction * Mexico City's 1985 earthquake * China's Tangshan earthquake * Tokyo's earthquake, fires, and WWII bombardment * Beirut in the 1990s wars * South Central Los Angeles following the Rodney King beating In so doing, they bring to light the experiences these resilient cities share, while underscoring that no two cities have recovered in the precisely the same way. This book will appeal to anyone interested in cities, among humankind's most durable artifacts and enduring forms of communal life.

Description:
With the exponential growth of internet services, IPv4, first released in 1981, is becoming even more outdated and irrelevant. The escalation of corporate intranets, cellular phones with internet access, technology webcasts, and file sharing have taken their toll, and there is a need for a greater number of IP addresses. While IPv4 uses 34-bit addresses, IPv6 addresses are 128 bits long, and allow for more unique addresses. While the adoption of IPv6 wonВ’t be immediate, it is necessary. Running IPv6 compares and contrasts IPv6 to IPv4, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. Because most major software and hardware vendors have (or will) adopt IPv6, the focus of this book is to leverage your existing knowledge of IPv4 and to help you apply that knowledge to the newer protocol. This book explains how to install and operate the IPv6 protocol for Windows XP, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Red Hat Linux, and Cisco routers. The book also covers DNS and BIND, Zebra, Apache 2, and Sendmail. About the Author Iljitsch is a freelance network specialist and writer in the Netherlands. He is the author of BGPand is active within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), especially within the Multihoming in IPv6 (multi6) working group.

Description:
This text presents a theory of probabilistic reasoning, statistical inference and decision. The book is concerned with the problems of reasoning under conditions of uncertainty, partial information and ignorance. It is argued that, in order to give appropriate weight to both ignorance and uncertainty, imprecise probabilities need to be assessed. The imprecision can be modelled mathematically by upper and lower probabilities or (more generally) upper and lower previsions. The degree of imprecision can reflect both the amount of information on which probabilities are based and the extent of conflict between different types of information. The book develops mathematical methods for reasoning using imprecise probabilities. These include methods for assessing probabilities, modifying the assessments to achieve coherence, updating them to take account of new information, and combining them to calculate other probabilities, draw conclusions and make decisions. The methods are extended in the second half of the book to construct a general theory of conditional probability and statistical inference. The mathematical theory is based on simple and compelling principles of avoiding sure loss, coherence and natural extension. Careful attention is given to the philosophical foundations, interpretation and justification of the theory. It is compared with alternate theories of inference, including Bayesian theories (which require all probability assesments to be precise), Bayesian sensitivity analysis, the Neyman-Pearson theory of confidence intervals, the Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions and the theory of fuzzy sets. The theory is applicable to a wide range of disciplines including statistics, decision theory, economics, psychology, philosophy of science, management science, operations research, engineering and artificial intelligence. (References are given to related work in these fields). In fact, the theory has important implications for any field in which the problems of uncertainty and limited information are taken seriously. This book should be of interest to researchers in statistics and those in related disciplines.

Description:
When the bandages came off, Parker looked in the mirror at a stranger. He had come in to the doctor with a face that the New York syndicate wanted to put a bullet in. Now he was going back out with a face that they were going to learn to fear. It cost him a lot. But it would be cheap at twice the price if it kept him alive while he did what he had to do. And what he had to do was steal. Because a new face couldn't keep Parker from his old life of crime and kicks...where money was there for the taking, and where nobody did it better than Parker.

Description:
With the increased efforts of the analog design community to integrate analog high-frequency front-ends for telecommunications, there has been heightened interest in the behaviour of nonlinear circuits since this can cause considerable degradation of signals. In analog integrated circuits at lower frequencies, such as filters, nonlinear behaviour limits the dynamic range. Analog integrated circuit designers often lack insight into nonlinear circuit behaviour. Indeed, designers are trained to reason in linear or linearized circuits but not in nonlinear ones. Numerical circuit simulations of nonlinear circuit behavior do not provide enough insight to the designer. Distortion Analysis of Analog Integrated Circuits, with a foreword by Robert G. Meyer, provides both qualitative and quantitative insight into the nonlinear behavior of analog integrated circuits at low and high frequencies. General techniques to suppress nonlinear behavior such as pre-distortion, linear and nonlinear feedback are explained in detail and illustrated with realistic examples. In this way the book fills the gap between the theory of nonlinear systems and practical analog integrated circuits. Distortion Analysis of Analog Integrated Circuits provides the reader with an in-depth analysis of elementary transistor stages, both CMOS and bipolar, as well as an analysis of several larger circuits. Hereby use is made of advanced transistor models that are also discussed in the book. The analyses take into account many more effects than in existing publications, thanks to the use of a calculation method that yields closed-form expressions for nonlinear behavior. These expressions are interpreted and illustrated with realistic numerical examples. Distortion Analysis of Analog Integrated Circuits is essential reading for practicing analog and mixed-signal design engineers and researchers in the field. It is also suitable as a text for an advanced course on the subject. From the foreword: `I am sure that the analog circuit design community will [...] welcome this work by Dr. Wambacq and Prof. Sansen as a major contribution to the analog circuit design literature in the area of distortion analysis of electronic circuits. I am personally looking forward to having a copy readily available for reference when designing integrated circuits for communication systems.' Robert G. Meyer, Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, University of California, Berkeley.

Description:
Light, or electromagnetic wave, is the most powerful tool for probing the quantum mechanical motions of electrons and nuclei within molecules and condensed matter. Optical Processes in Solids describes the principles of this spectroscopic study with the help of illustrative comparisons of theoretical and experimental results that take into account the revolutionary progress brought about by the use of intense lasers and high-energy synchrotron light. In the final chapter Yutaka Toyozawa presents a speculative scenario on how solar light may have caused chemical reactions among atoms and molecules, leading to the creation and evolution of life on earth. Book Description Light (electromagnetic radiation) is the most powerful tool for probing the quantum mechanical motions of electrons and nuclei within molecules and condensed matter. In this book the author describes the principles of such spectroscopic study with the help of illustrative comparison between theory and experimental studies.

Description:
More and more businesses today have their receive phone service through Internet instead of local phone company lines. Many businesses are also using their internal local and wide-area network infrastructure to replace legacy enterprise telephone networks. This migration to a single network carrying voice and data is called convergence, and it's revolutionizing the world of telecommunications by slashing costs and empowering users. The technology of families driving this convergence is called VoIP, or Voice over IP. VoIP has advanced Internet-based telephony to a viable solution, piquing the interest of companies small and large. The primary reason for migrating to VoIP is cost, as it equalizes the costs of long distance calls, local calls, and e-mails to fractions of a penny per use. But the real enterprise turn-on is how VoIP empowers businesses to mold and customize telecom and datacom solutions using a single, cohesive networking platform. These business drivers are so compelling that legacy telephony is going the way of the dinosaur, yielding to Voice over IP as the dominant enterprise communications paradigm. Developed from real-world experience by a senior developer, O'Reilly's Switching to VoIP provides solutions for the most common VoIP migration challenges. So if you're a network professional who is migrating from a traditional telephony system to a modern, feature-rich network, this book is a must-have. You'll discover the strengths and weaknesses of circuit-switched and packet-switched networks, how VoIP systems impact network infrastructure, as well as solutions for common challenges involved with IP voice migrations. Among the challenges discussed and projects presented: building a softPBX configuring IP phones ensuring quality of service scalability standards-compliance topological considerations coordinating a complete system ?switchover? migrating applications like voicemail and directory services retro-interfacing to traditional telephony supporting mobile users security and survivability dealing with the challenges of NAT To help you grasp the core principles at work, Switching to VoIP uses a combination of strategy and hands-on "how-to" that introduce VoIP routers and media gateways, various makes of IP telephone equipment, legacy analog phones, IPTables and Linux firewalls, and the Asterisk open source PBX software by Digium. You'll learn how to build an IP-based or legacy-compatible phone system and voicemail system complete with e-mail integration while becoming familiar with VoIP protocols and devices. Switching to VoIP remains vendor-neutral and advocates standards, not brands. Some of the standards explored include: SIP H.323, SCCP, and IAX Voice codecs 802.3af Type of Service, IP precedence, DiffServ, and RSVP 802.1a/b/g WLAN If VoIP has your attention, like so many others, then Switching to VoIP will help you build your own system, install it, and begin making calls. It's the only thing left between you and a modern telecom network. About the Author Born and raised in Detroit, MI, Ted Wallingford began working with information systems at the age of 7, when his father brought home a used Timex Sinclair 1000 computer and a notepad of hand-written BASIC programs from a garage sale. This little machine was the start of an eclectic career in the business of bits and bytes. While working in the data center at ad agency J. Walter Thompson, Ted began to write articles for computer magazines. This led him into writing marketing materials for Gateway Computer and the former Amiga Inc., where he was also webmaster in 1999. As I.T. Director for a large, private construction firm, Ted transformed a single-operator midrange computer room into a mission-critical 24x7 data center hosting services for lines of business across the country. Ted has designed and implemented Voice over IP on networks large and small. He offers network design for VoIP systems and product management assistance for up'n'coming VoIP carriers through his macVoIP.com consulting practice. Ted believes that VoIP and the Internet are today's revolution in distance communication. Aside from technology and writing, Ted has served as a member of the board of trustees for an international adoption agency in suburban Cleveland, where he lives with his wife and two children. Ted is currently working on Switching to VoIP for O'Reilly Media.

Description:
Originally published in 1910, this book takes the mystery out of the accumulation of wealth and breaks it down into a scientific formula. Here is an excerpt from the Preface of the book:This book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached. It is expected that the reader will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or an Edison; and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich; for the science herein applied is an exact science, and failure is impossible........In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down herein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment: It works....and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.- The AuthorThis 2 CD audio book set is unabridged and completely authentic. The narrator reads each word from the book as it was originally written by Wallace Wattles. This audiobook makes it easy to learn the timeless principles found in The Science Of Getting Rich. It also makes a great gift for anyone with the desire to get rich!
