Description:
If you're using PHP 4, then chances are good that an upgrade to PHP 5 is in your future. The more you've heard about the exciting new features in PHP 5, the sooner that upgrade is probably going to be. Although an in-depth, soup-to-nuts reference guide to the language is good to have on hand, it's not the book an experienced PHP programmer needs to get started with the latest release. What you need is a lean and focused guide that answers your most pressing questions: what's new with the technology, what's different, and how do I make the best use of it? In other words, you need a copy of Upgrading to PHP 5. This new book is targeted toward PHP developers who are already familiar with PHP 4. Rather than serve as a definitive guide to the entire language, the book zeroes in on PHP 5's new features, and covers these features definitively. You'll find a concise appraisal of the differences between PHP 4 and PHP 5, a detailed look at what's new in this latest version, and you'll see how PHP 5 improves on PHP 4 code. See PHP 4 and PHP 5 code side-by-side, to learn how the new features make it easier to solve common PHP problems. Each new feature is shown in code, helping you understand why it's there, when to use it, and how it's better than PHP 4. Short, sample programs are included throughout the book. Topics covered in Upgrading to PHP 5 include: The new set of robust object-oriented programming features An improved MySQL extension, supporting MySQL 4.1, prepared statements, and bound parameters Completely rewritten support for XML: DOM, XSLT, SAX, and SimpleXML Easy web services with SOAP SQLite, an embedded database library bundled with PHP 5 Cleaner error handling with exceptions Other new language features, such as iterators, streams, and more. Upgrading to PHP 5 won't make you wade through information you've covered before. Written by Adam Trachtenberg, coauthor of the popular PHP Cookbook, this book will take you straight into the heart of all that's new in PHP 5. By the time you've finished, you'll know PHP 5 in practice as well as in theory. About the Author Adam Trachtenberg has an MBA from Columbia Business School. At business school, he focused on general management and operations, with an emphasis on the field of technology. Adam also has a BA from Columbia University. As an undergraduate, he majored in mathematics and his other studies included computer science and Chinese. Before returning to school, he co-founded and served as Vice President for Development at two companies, Student.Com and TVGrid.Com. At both firms, he led the front- and middle-end web site design and development, worked on corporate planning and strategy, and served as liaison between the product and marketing teams. During study breaks, Adam enjoys playing squash, reading fiction, and eating in New York City's many wonderful restaurants. He wishes he was a better at playing pool, knew the constellations, and was handy around the house.

Description:
Provides step-by-step instruction on the basics of Fibre Channel technology and demonstrates how to deploy Hewlett-Packard's advanced Fibre Channel products to address your most critical enterprise storage challenges. Softcover. DLC: Fibre Channel (Standard). From the Inside Flap Preface WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT This book discusses the implementation of Fibre Channel technology for Mass Storage environments. It opens with discussions on storage architectures, their limitations, and how Fibre Channel helps to overcome these limitations. Next, details of the Fibre Channel technology, focused on the mass storage application, are discussed. Addressing schemes for the Hewlett-Packard implementation are covered in detail as well as Hewlett-Packard products supporting this technology. And finally, future developments and improvements are addressed. WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK? You should read this book if Fibre Channel is new to you or if you will be working with peripherals that are attached to a Hewlett-Packard system using Fibre Channel technology. This is a brand new technology that is quickly becoming an industry standard. It is already being installed in data centers around the world and may very well be the next communications protocol installed at your location. If you are a System Administrator and your job is to control configurations and resources of computer systems or do installation of peripherals, this book is a must. If you are a Network Administrator and your job is to configure and support networks, this book is a must. Also read this book if you are a Technical Support Technician and you support or troubleshoot computer systems and their resources. WHY IS THIS BOOK NEEDED? Fibre Channel is a new technology and many people are not familiar with its functionality or terminology. Therefore, this book was written to introduce new Fibre Channel users to this important, fast rising technology. Publications that do exist on Fibre Channel, talk more generically about the technology or focus on the networking aspects. This publication is focused on adding information on Fibre Channel as a technology applied to the mass storage environment and specifically how Hewlett-Packard is implementing Fibre Channel in mass storage environments. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK This book can and should be used as a reference book. For example, if you are familiar with Fibre Channel you would want to review the functional levels in Chapter Two and then read on from there. If you are familiar with Fibre Channel and only want to know how HP is implementing addressing, you could read Chapter Four. However, if you are unfamiliar with Fibre Channel you will want to start at the beginning, including this preface, and read through chapter by chapter. It is written in a progressive manner to lead you through learning step-by-step. AT A GLANCE Following is a chapter-by-chapter glance at this book: Chapter 1 В— This chapter discusses limitations of current mass storage architectures, explains how Fibre Channel answers these limitations, and defines basic terms and topologies. Chapter 2 В— This chapter details the functional levels of Fibre Channel, emphasizing physical components. There are six levels, three are port levels and three are node levels. Chapter 3 В— This chapter discusses the features and operations of the Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL), and explains how FC-AL is a very effective topology for mass storage. Hewlett-Packard has a commitment to this topology, as evidenced by its Fibre Channel hub product. This chapter will familiarize the reader with the characteristics, operations, and advantages of FC-AL. Chapter 4 В— This chapter explains why Fibre Channel is a fast, flexible technology that enables a large number of devices to communicate. This chapter describes in detail Peripheral Device, Logical Unit, and Volume Set addressing, which is unique to Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX Operating System environment. Chapter 5 В— This chapter presents an overview of the Hewlett-Packard's Fibre Channel products, describes the systems that support Fibre Channel, and discusses how the products work together. Chapter 6 В— This chapter discusses the future developments and improvements to Fibre Channel and how to get more information. This chapter familiarizes the reader with some of the capabilities that may become available in the near future. About the Author Ralph Thornburgh has worked for Hewlett-Packard Company for 24 years as an IT trainer, IT Data Center Manager, and Learning Products Engineer (technical writer). During that time he has created twenty-one training classes for Hewlett-Packard data center employees and support personnel worldwide. He has also written fifteen user manuals and numerous technical support manuals. He led the team that wrote the multicourse training program for Hewlett-Packard's implementation of Fibre Channel for Mass Storage and two other classes for Hewlett-Packard Fibre Channel peripheral devices. While at Hewlett-Packard, Ralph held a secondary teaching certificate for three years. He designed and delivered computer class curriculum, to include operating systems and computer operations, for The Computer Learning Center in Santa Clara, California. Ralph has also designed, developed, and delivered an American Sign Language (ASL) course for middle-school children. Ralph was also in the U.S. Army for eleven years, part of which was spent in the California Army National Guard. There he was the section training sergeant, training soldiers in technical skills such as Aviation Electrician, as well as in Basic Combat Skills, such as land navigation (map reading) and basic marksmanship.

Description:
This dictionary is the first compilation of all the elements of DNA sequences of known biological meaning. It lists alphabetically and describes some 700 nucleotide sequence ''words'' based on a four character alphabet (A,C,G,T) used to represent the hereditary information carried by DNA molecules. The data collected are scattered in more than 400 scientific papers. The dictionary is extremely useful for revealing and locating particular features of newly sequenced genome parts and for constructing artificial sequences. A context index, an index of all pentanucleotide derivates of the word entries, provides a quick way to ascertain whether a potentially interesting site encountered in a sequence has already been identified in a different context. Reference tables, such as restrictions, site tables, or oligonucleotide frequency distributions, are also included. This book is of interest to molecular biologists and genetic engineers.

Description:
The great biologist Louis Pasteur suppressed 'awkward' data because it didn't support the case he was making. John Snow, the 'first epidemiologist' was doing nothing others had not done before. Gregor Mendel, the supposed 'founder of genetics' never grasped the fundamental principles of 'Mendelian' genetics. Joseph Lister's famously clean hospital wards were actually notorious dirty. And Einstein's general relativity was only 'confirmed' in 1919 because an eminent British scientist cooked his figures. These are just some of the revelations explored in this book. Drawing on current history of science scholarship, "Fabulous Science" shows that many of our greatest heroes of science were less than honest about their experimental data and not above using friends in high places to help get their ideas accepted. It also reveals that the alleged revolutionaries of the history of science were often nothing of the sort. Prodigiously able they may have been, but the epithet of the 'man before his time' usually obscures vital contributions made their unsung contemporaries and the intrinsic merits of ideas they overturned. These distortions of the historical record mostly arise from our tendency to read the present back into the past. But in many cases, scientists owe their immortality to a combination of astonishing effrontery and their skills as self-promoters.

Description:
With the release of .NET 2.0, the Visual Basic 2005 language has been updated with numerous new programming constructs (XML code documentation, operator overloading, generics, and partial types just to name a few!). Now more than ever, choosing a .NET language boils down to personal preference (rather than a languageВ’s feature set). However, to effectively make use of these new language features, developers must have a rock-solid grounding in object-oriented technology, assemblies, and the core .NET technologies. The purpose of Pro VB 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform, Second Edition is to provide you with such a foundation by diving deep into the language of VB 2005 and the platform of .NET. Thus, rather than simply showing how a code wizard can generate all the code on your behalf, this text will first show you how to author the code yourself so you can alter the generated code to your liking. Beyond learning all the details of the VB 2005 programming language, you will also dive into the details of building desktop applications (using Windows Forms) and websites (via ASP.NET 2.0), and how to interact with relational databases (Г  la ADO.NET). Furthermore, you will explore how to build distributed applications using the .NET remoting layer and XML web services. Rest assured, this text will expose you to all the major services of the .NET platform and put you in the perfect position for further exploration. About the Author Andrew Troelsen is a partner, trainer, and consultant at Intertech-Inc., and is a leading authority on both .NET and COM.Troelsen has a degree in mathematical linguistics and South Asian studies from the University of Minnesota and is a frequent speaker at numerous .NET-related conferences. He currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his wife, Amanda, and spends his free time investigating .NET and waiting for the Wild to win the Stanley Cup.

Description:
Here's a comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide to the underlying technologies, key selection criteria, and design and deployment processes behind wireless local loop (WLL) systems. This one-source reference helps technical professionals develop a sound understanding of WLL system design procedures, and provides practical guidance on choosing the best WLL and access technologies. It's unique in its clear presentation of both the technical and business issues associated with wireless in the local loop. If you're a WLL engineer, or a non-technical manager, marketer, or regulator involved in WLL system development, you'll find the information in this book invaluable. Well written introductory chapters discuss the main areas of the telecommunications environment, and the concepts of convergence and access technologies. You learn why wireless in the local loop is seriously challenging the use of traditional copper cable, the economic issues behind wired and wireless interconnection, and even some expert WLL market forecasts. From the Author Wireless local loop - the use of radio to provide a communications link to homes and businesses - has been a topic of much interest in the wireless community since around 1995. However, much has changed over the last five years. In the first edition of this book, I looked in detail at the use of wireless local loop as a means to provide connections to homes at low and medium data rates. Since then the emphasis has changed towards higher bandwidth systems able to provide 1 - 10Mbits/s to homes and up to 1Gbits/s to businesses. In this second edition, I have taken the opportunity to look in detail at this new class of wireless system, with extended chapters covering broadband technology and operation. I have also looked back over the last five years to ask why the original vision for fixed wireless changed and what the implications are for the future. The aim of this book is to be the single point of reference for engineers, managers, marketers, sales teams and others working in the area of fixed wireless, within manufacturers, operators, regulators, consultants and others involved in the industry. I have been highly active in the fixed wireless arena since 1997, working as Motorola's head of strategy for fixed wireless and chairing and presenting at many industry conferences. This book is a synthesis of all I have heard and learnt and has become widely used within the industry. --This text refers to an alternate edition.

Change the way you trade the S&P 500 Index This book is not another compilation of indicators you already know; none of the tools herein has been published in book form before. MEJT is a different system based on the principle that price action during certain times of the day allows you to make predictions regarding future support and resistance levels. The system allows you to tell, well in advance, which moves might have staying power and which ones should retrace. If you use technical analysis to trade the markets, this book will give you information you can, and will, use every day. About the Author Jeffrey S. Tennant, MD is an individual investor. For over eight years he has been giving daily online analysis (most recently at www.timeandcycles.com) of the Standard and Poor's 500 Index. He has relied heavily on the MEJT System to make his predictions, and he wrote this book because of the large number of requests he received from traders who wished to learn his methodology. In addition to performing technical analysis of the stock market, which he has done for over 30 years, his lifelong interests include ophthalmology, trivia and chess. He and his wife, Noreen, have four grown children: David, Hilary, Andrew and Bradley.

Description:
From the bestselling author of Under the Black Flag comes the definitive biography of the swashbuckling nineteenth-century maritime hero upon whom Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower are based. Nicknamed le loup des mers ('the sea wolf') by Napoleon, Thomas Cochrane was one of the most daring and successful naval heroes of all time. In this fascinating account of Cochranes life, historian David Cordingly unearths startling new details about the real-life 'Master and Commander,' from his daring exploits against the French navy to his role in the liberation of Chile, Peru, and Brazil, and the shock exchange scandal that forced him out of England and almost ended his naval career. Drawing on previously unpublished papers, his own travels, wide reading, and the kind of original research that distinguished The Billy Ruffian, Cordingly tells the rip-roaring story of the archetypal romantic hero who conquered the seas and, in the process, defined his era.

Pro XML Development with Java Technology has been written to help you, the professional Java developer who needs a practical hands-on guide to marrying these technologies together effectively. There are a lot of books out there, but none really explore the combination deeply, and they are largely theoretical. The main objective here was to consolidate the theory and practice of XML and Java technologies in a single, up-to-date source, that is firmly grounded in underlying XML concepts, and can be consulted time and again to rapidly speed up enterprise application development! It covers all the essential XML topics, including XML Schemas, addressing of XML documents through XPath, transformation of XML documents using XSLT stylesheets, storage and retrieval of XML content in native XML and relational databases, web applications based on Ajax, and SOAP/HTTP and WSDL based Web Services. These XML topics are covered in he applied context of up-to-date Java technologies, including JAXP, JAXB, XMLBeans, and JAX-WS. You will find this book useful in building contemporary, service-oriented enterprise applications.

Description:
* Experiments are linked to real applications. Students are likely to be interested and excited to learn more and explore. Example of experiments linked to real applications can be seen in Experiment 2, steps 6, 7, 15, and 16; Experiment 5, steps 6 to 10 and Experiment 7, steps 12 to 20. * Self-contained background to all electronics experiments. Students will be able to follow without having taken an electronics course. Includes a self-contained introduction based on circuits only. For the instructor this provides flexibility as to when to run the lab. It can run concurrently with the first circuits analysis course. * Review background sections are provided. This convenient text feature provides an alternative point of view; helps provide a uniform background for students of different theoretical backgrounds. * A "touch-and-feel" approach helps to provide intuition and to make things "click". Rather than thinking of the lab as a set of boring procedures, students get the idea that what they are learning is real. * Encourages students to explore and to ask "what if" questions. Helps students become active learners. * Introduces students to simple design at a very early stage. Helps students see the relevance of what they are learning, and to become active learners. * Helps students become tinkerers and to experiment on their own. Students are encouraged to become creative, and their mind is opened to new possibilities. This also benefits their subsequent professional work and/or graduate study.

Description:
Since 1994 when he wrote his first “Hitchhiker’s Guide”, William Vaughn has been providing developers all over the world the intimate details of how SQL Server can be accessed and managed from RAD languages like Visual Basic and Visual Basic .NET. With the 7th Edition, Bill has completely rewritten this encyclopedic work from cover to cover–giving readers his insightful views on how applications should be built to maximize both developer and code performance. Visual Studio and the languages it hosts have never been as sophisticated as they are today–the same can be said for SQL Server. This makes it even more important for developers to understand how to best leverage their features without being held back by their complexity. That’s what this book is all about–making it easier for developers regardless of their know-how.   The 7th edition is unique in that it’s designed to provide not only up-to-date tutorials on the latest development tools provided by Visual Studio and SQL Server, but also a solid platform of architectural advice and rich examples for developers trying to choose between the myriad of platform options. Beginners and experts alike will find comprehensive step-by-step instructions that can make the reader’s introduction to the latest versions of Visual Studio and SQL Server far easier.   Key topic coverage includes: •  Data access architectures and how to choose the best strategy for Windows Forms, ASP.NET, XML Web Services, and SQL Server CLR executables. Where do these make sense and how much will they cost to build and maintain? •  SQL Server and relational database fundamentals and inner-machinery. How does SQL Server work and why is it important that developers know? •  Making the development experience more productive through judicious use of the Visual Studio toolset, and how to know when the wizards can help. •  Using the latest ADO.NET data provider efficiently and safely. •  How to protect the security of your database–and your job–by avoiding common mistakes. •  How to build secure, efficient, scalable applications in less time with fewer resources–how to create faster code faster. •  How to leverage the potential of SQL Server CLR executables and knowing when these features make sense. •  How to work with your DBA to maintain database integrity and security. •  Working with the new Visual Studio report controls to expose your organization’s data safely and easily with or without leveraging existing SQL Server Reporting Services technology.   William R. Vaughn is the President of Beta V Corporation and a Microsoft MVP. In 2000 he retired from Microsoft after 14 years to focus on mentoring, speaking, and writing. His specialty is data access application design especially when connecting to SQL Server–over the years he’s written 12 books on the subject. He’s a popular speaker at technical conferences all over the world where his wit and no-holds-barred technical insights win him rave reviews. William is also a member of the prestigious INETA Speaker’s Bureau. His works include articles for SQL Server Magazine and a bi-weekly editorial for Processor Magazine as well as books published by Microsoft Press and Apress.   The book includes a DVD that contains a wealth of examples as well as several sample databases used to illustrate points discussed in the book. Authenticated readers will also have unrestricted access to the book’s supporting web site, www.hitchhikerguides.net, where additional examples, online forums, and other supplementary materials are available.   www.awprofessional.com/msserverseries www.hitchhikerguides.net www.betav.com/blogs/billva www.betav.com From the Back Cover Since 1994 when he wrote his first “Hitchhiker’s Guide”, William Vaughn has been providing developers all over the world the intimate details of how SQL Server can be accessed and managed from RAD languages like Visual Basic and Visual Basic .NET. Description:
Today’s corporate decision makers are more sophisticated buyers than ever before. Whilst most love to buy, all hate to be sold to. They are no longer willing to be pushed, pressurised or otherwise badgered into making a decision to buy what you are offering. Indeed, the harder you push, the more likely it is that they will push back and you will end up with nothing. This book is about understanding how people buy high value services and products. It’s about earning respect and trust by knowing your client’s business and addressing their problems. It’s about solving their issues and helping them succeed, not giving them the вЂ˜hard sell’. It tells you what to talk about, and when, and how to really hear what your contacts are saying. Ultimately, it’s about the importance of building rapport and relationships to win business. The book’s message is clear … if there’s little difference between your product or service and that of your competitors, there needs to be a BIG difference in the way you perform in the вЂ˜sales zone’.

Description:
Microsoft has introduced the right server for a world now dominated by highly distributed systems and web-based server applications, and O'Reilly has written a book that will earn a prominent place on administrators' desk tops. The GUI chapter is organized by topic according to major themes of Windows Server 2003 administration, providing one-stop shopping for busy admins. For example, if you want to find out about Active Directory and how to manage it, you'd begin by turning to Active Directory. Each topic begins with a description of basic concepts, followed by a description of tools (such as Microsoft Management Console snap-ins) used to administer the feature, instructions on how to perform common or important administrative tasks, and notes detailing subtle points and potential gotchas Windows Server 2003 offers greatly enhanced command-line administration, and the command reference prominently highlights the many new commands in this release. Dozens of new commands and scripts have been added for administration of Active Directory, disks, event logs, Group Policy, IIS, network diagnostics, the pagefile, printers, processes, shared folders, and the Registry. The result is a Windows operating system platform that now rivals Unix in its ability to support command-line and scripted administration.

The Computer Algebra and Differential Equations meeting held in France in June 1992 (CADE-92) was the third of a series of biennial workshops devoted to recent developments in computer algebra systems. This book contains selected papers from that meeting. Three main topics are discussed. The first of these is the theory of D-modules. This offers an excellent way to effectively handle linear systems of partial differential equations. The second topic concerns the theoretical aspects of dynamical systems, with an introduction to Ecalle theory and perturbation analysis applied to differential equations and other nonlinear systems. The final topic is the theory of normal forms. Here recent improvements in the theory and computation of normal forms are discussed.
